“Have you ever thought why am I eating this, I am not hungry?” Here is a little challenge. For one week, create a food log by writing down everything you eat as normal. That is nothing new, right? Many people journal when trying to get in control of their eating. But here is the real challenge: add to your journal what you are doing, feeling and your hunger level. You may discover a few things that will help you know why you eat.
- You are watching TV and have associated TV with food.
- You are angry, stressed or bored and food brings comfort to you.
- You are starving because you skipped a meal due to business or fear of gaining weight which caused you to overeat in the long run.
Periodically, keeping a food journal, by writing down everything you eat including your activity, emotions and hunger level can give you a true picture of your eating habits. Just knowing what to eat is very different from knowing why you eat.
I have often heard women say that they are too scared to write it down. Before changes can be made that lead to a consistent healthy diet, you have to first become aware of what and why you are eating. Writing it down is the first step.
