According to Dr. Michael Roizen of Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and author of You on a Diet, “we lose an average of 5 percent of our muscle mass every 10 years after the age of 35—if we don’t do anything about it.” With a loss of muscle mass, our metabolism decreases which means we do not burn as many calories, as we once did, when exercising and at rest. Most women, however, feel the need to do cardio, cardio and more cardio when struggling to maintain a healthy weight. So what is the answer, cardio or strength training for weight maintenance? Strength Training.
Lift weights and don’t be afraid
To build muscle, you have to wear it down. Unfortunately, that does not happen by doing 100 reps with a 3-pound weight. You have to be working at a load that is challenging to you. There is no need to be afraid, because the good Lord knew what he was doing when he made a woman. He did not create us to become the incredible “Hulkett”. It is not going to happen.
Feel Good About Your Body
If you are struggling to feel good about your body or you have hit a plateau, incorporate at least one day of strength training into your routine. If you are in that “cardio obsessed” mindset and still wondering if regular strength training is right for you, here are just a few benefits for a busy woman:
- It does not take much equipment
- A good intense work out can be done in 30 minutes or less
- It increases your metabolism so that you burn more calories at rest
- It builds your self esteem and confidence in the way you feel about your body
- It empowers you to get through your busy day
As with any exercise, remember the key to results is consistency which is why I am so passionate about designing strength programs for busy women. No matter how little time there seems to be, there is the right program to gain confidence mentally and physically.
From a busy woman who was cardio obsessed and only picked up a weight when I had an extra 5 minutes at the end of a run, I have come to value the benefits of lifting weights. When short on time and must decide cardio or strength training for weight maintenance. No question, lift weights.
