As a busy woman, I rarely leave home without an apple in my purse. Sounds corny, but it’s true. You never know when you are going to get stuck between meals and need a little energy boosts or need a filler to avoid over eating at your next meal. There have been times I have needed my apple between Sunday school and church service, while out shopping, or waiting to see the Dr. When you know your schedule will be tight, an apple is a busy woman’s solution for a quick healthy snack.
For only 95-100 calories, there are many benefits from an apple. At 4 grams of fiber for a medium apple, it satisfies hunger and aides in weight loss. It is a good source of immune-boosting vitamin C and counts as 1 cup of fruit, which is halfway through your daily fruit quota of 2 cups a day on a 2,000-calorie diet.
In several studies, apples have also been proven to lower risk of cardiovascular disease, lower cholesterol and improve exercise endurance.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE
I have to admit, having a bad apple can really turn you off from ever eating one again. I don’t know about you, but a soft apple is useless and goes to the trash. If you have experience the dilemma, you may need to try various types of apples. My personal favorites are the Gala and Fuji apples. I have found that are the most crisp and crunchy and last for a long time when stored in the refrigerator. Of course they are also delicious with a tablespoon of peanut butter, cut in oatmeal or with yogurt. Try this for something new when you have a few minutes in the kitchen or a snack with your kids. I love it.
Creamy Peanut Butter Dip
- 1- 5.3 ounce container of 100 calorie nonfat Yoplait greek vanilla yogurt
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- 1/2 tbsp honey
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
This makes four 2 tbsp servings at 70 calories per serving. Double it for a healthy appetizer or sweet treat at your next social gathering.
Goal this week: I will add two snacks a day, one with a fruit or vegetable.
